About Petersburg - Monuments of Petersburg
The statue of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great in the small park in front of Alexandriysky Theater was unveiled in 1873. The statue has been designed in 1862 by the artist Mikhail Mikeshin – the designer of the famous sculptural group One Thousand Years of Russia in Novgorod. The model of the statue of Catherine the Great was made by the sculptor Matvei Chizhov and the nine sculptures surrounding it were made by the sculptor Alexander Opekushin. The architect David Grimm designed the pedestal and supervised the installation works. The statue of Catherine the Great is on a high pedestal made of polished gray Serdobolsk granite. Around the foundation of the pedestal, the sculptures of the outstanding Russian men of the second half of the 18 th century can be seen. These are Alexander Suvorov, Pyotr Rumyantsev, Gavriil Derzhavin, Ivan Betskoy, Yekaterina Dashkova, Alexei Orlov, Alexander Bezborodko, Grigory Potemkin and Vasily Chichagov. In spite of this unreal composition (the statue of Catherine the Great is almost twice as big as the sculptures surrounding it) and somewhat theatrical position of the Empress, this is a very realistic work of sculpture with portrait likeness.
