The
museum commemorating the deeds of
the great Russian military
commander Alexander Vasilyevich
Suvorov (1730-1800) was
originally opened in the building
of the General Headquarters
Academy in 1900, exactly one
hundred years after the death of
Alexander Suvorov. In 1904, the
official opening ceremony of the
museum in a specially constructed
building took place. The building
had been designed by the
architect Alexander von Hogen
with the assistance of Herman
Grimm. Many people had given
money for construction of the
museum.
The architects who designed the
building used the traditional
techniques of Russian
architecture and made the museum
look like a fortress. The facades
of the side wings are decorated
with two big mosaic panels. One
of them, by the artist Nikolai
Shabunin, shows Suvorov's
departure from his estate, the
village of Konchanskoye, for the
1799 Italian campaign. The other,
Suvorov Crossing the Alps
, is a mosaic version of the
work of the battle painter A.
Popov. The mosaics were made
under the supervision of Mikhail
Zoshchenko and Nikolai
Maslennikov.
During the siege, the building
was severely damaged by a bomb.
The museum was again opened for
visitors only in 1951, after
restoration works supervised by
Mikhail Plotnikov. There are more
than 100 thousand exhibits in the
museum, personal belongings, arms
and awards of Generalissimus
Suvorov, documents, books, flags,
portraits and a collection of
battle paintings. The museum also
possesses a collection of toy
soldiers, the total of about 50
thousand items. This is the
biggest collection of toy
soldiers in Russia . The exhibits
of the museum show the activities
of the famous Russian military
commander at the background of
military history and Russian
culture.
