The
Literary and Memorial Museum of Anna
Akhmatova (1889-1966, a famous
Russian poetess) in the Fountain
House was founded in 1989. The museum
is in the garden wing of Sheremetev's
Palace – "the Fountain House"
(designed by Savva Chevakinsky and
Fyodor Agrunov). In this wing of the
palace, the poetess lived the
greatest part of her life, and on
manuscripts of many of her poems, the
place where they were written is
mentioned – "the Fountain House".
Akhmatova moved here in the middle of
the 1920s and lived here until
February 1952, leaving this house
only during the siege.
In
six rooms of the museum, there are
exhibits dealing with the life and
works of Anna Akhmatova. There are
rare, almost unknown portraits and
photographs of the poetess and her
contemporaries, books from her
library, rare editions of her works,
unique autographs of the poets of
"the Silver Age of Russian Poetry"
and personal belongings. There is the
authentic interior of the study of
Mr. Punin, Akhmatova's husband, and
the poetess's own room. There is a
concert and exhibition hall on the
second floor of the museum. Literary
events and concerts are held here, as
well as exhibitions of the works of
modern artists of Russia and the
West. The first floor also houses
"the Video Lounge" – a cafe where
video films about the 20 th -century
Russian poets are shown.
Since 1999, the Public Charity
Foundation of the friends of the
Museum of Anna Akhmatova in the
Fountain House has existed. Its
activities include cooperation with
the world's leading experts in the
works of Akhmatova, St. Petersburg's
artists, writers, art critics.
The
Literary and Memorial Museum of Anna
Akhmatova in the Fountain House is
one of the "younger" museums of
St. Petersburg. It was founded in
1989, to commemorate the centenary
anniversary of the birth of the
poetess.
