The
museum devoted to the life and
creative works of Fyodor Mikhailovich
Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was opened in
1971 in the writer's last apartment
where he lived from 1878 and where he
died in 1881. The writer's widow,
Anna Grigorievna, until her last
days, tried to do everything to
preserve the writer's manuscripts and
belongings. Her belonging are also
exhibited in the museum now.
Dostoevsky's apartment was restored
using archival materials, photographs
and memoirs of his contemporaries.
The museum is divided into two parts:
the memorial one and the literary
one. The memorial part shows
Dostoevsky's personal belongings and
furniture. All these items are
typical of the households of Russian
intellectuals of the 2 nd half of the
19 th century. Many of these things
were given to the museum by the
writer's descendants.
The
literary part of the museum shows how
the novels Poor People ,
Crime and Punishment , Idiot
, Demons , etc. were
written and how they were connected
with the circumstances of the
writer's life. Here are copies of
these books published in Dostoevsky's
lifetime, illustrations to these
books, books and photographs with
autographs of the writer and his
famous contemporaries, manuscripts,
portraits.
Every year, in November, the
international research conferences
"Dostoevsky and World Culture" are
held at the museum; there are also
literary events and exhibitions.
The
great Russian writer Fyodor
Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821-1881)
was one of the classics of the world
literature. The literary and memorial
museum located at the corner of
Kuznechny Pereulok and Dostoevsky
Street shows how the writer lived and
wrote his books.
The
life of Dostoevsky and his works are
closely connected with St. Petersburg
. He lived for twenty nine years in
different apartment buildings of the
city, and these places are still
remembered as the places connected
with the works of "the most St. Petersburgian"
writer of the 19 th century.
"Dostoevsky's St. Petersburg " is the
city of slums and poor people, the
miserable and the dying. This is one
more image of the city – not an
official image, but also an integral
part of the existing idea of
St. Petersburg.
