The oldest Russian military museum, the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineering Corps and Signals, is located in the historical center of St. Petersburg, in the Kronwerk of the Peter and Paul Fortress. The museum is a contemporary of St. Petersburg: its history dates back to 1703. It was then that the Zeichhaus was founded in front of the Peter and Paul Fortress by order of Peter the Great. Here, they began to collect especially interesting and rare arms "to keep them for ever". This was how the first collections of the museum appeared.

The Museum of Artillery, Engineering Corps and Signals was founded in 1756. In 1868, the building of the former Arsenal was given to the museum. The museum is still in this building. Today's name of the museum appeared only in 1965: previously, it has been called the Artillery Museum. A variety of arms and ammunition is shown in the museum. Exhibitions are held here, as well as lectures and guided tours. At present, the museum possesses valuable collections of guns, rifles, swords, military engineering equipment, signals, banners, military uniforms, pictures and drawings of battles, medals. There are more than 700 thousand exhibits in the museum, as well as 215 thousand archival files, 100 thousand volumes of books on military history, 90 thousand photo negatives and slides. Since 1918, the museum has kept the collections of 27 regimental museums of the Russian Army. The museum exhibits are displayed in 13 rooms with the total area of 17 thousand square meters; samples of Medieval and modern guns and the latest rocket systems are installed in the courtyard of the museum.

The exhibits of the museum show the military history of Russia from its earliest days to present time. Among the rare items exhibited in the museum are the cannons made by Andrei Chokhov – the maker of the famous Czar Cannon, an official chariot used for transportation of the artillery banner in the middle of the 18 th century, the cannons from "the entertainment regiments" of Peter the Great, personal arms, medals and gifts received by Russian Emperors, military commanders and designers of arms, trophy arms (Swedish and Turkish arms, Napoleon's personal arms, etc.).

In 2002, there was the exhibition "20-th -century Legends of Arms". It displayed the samples of guns, rifles and pistols – the works of the most famous arms designers (Friedrich von Manlicher, Anton Browning, Paul Mauser, Leo Nagant, Mikhail Kalashnikov, etc.). This unique collection traces the development of guns in the 20 th century – from the pistols and rifles of World War I to the latest samples of pistols and guns.

There are also experimental samples of arms, as well as those widely used in the armies of the leading countries of the world, such as Mosin's "three-lined gun", Colt revolver and machine-gun, Thompson's pistol-machine-gun, Maxim's machine-gun, PPSh machine-gun, Bazooka and Fly guns, M-16 rifle, Uzi machine-gun, etc.).
