The palace and park ensemble of
Yelagin Island is a real masterpiece
of Russian architecture and
landscaping of the 1 st third of the
19-th century. The country palace of
Ivan Yelagin, one of the courtiers of
Catherine the Great, was probably
designed by the architect Giacomo
Quarenghi and constructed in the
1780s. Then the palace was
reconstructed in 1818-1822 for
Empress Maria Fyodorovna. It was then
that considerable landscaping was
done on Yelagin Island and the
beautiful park was formed. Until
1917, the palace was a summer
residence of the Emperor's family. In
1942, during World War II, the palace
was ruined. It was reconstructed by
the architect Mikhail Plotnikov in
1952-1960.
The first floor of the palace
houses a suite of official rooms
decorated by such outstanding
painters and sculptors of the late 18-th
-early 19-th centuries as Antonio
Vighi, Barnaba Medici, Pietro Scotti,
Vasily Demut-Malinovsky and Stepan
Pimenov. Of special interest are the
Oval Hall, the Crimson Room and the
Blue Room. Here, you can see palace
furniture of the first half of the 19-th century.
The second floor houses an
exhibition of applied art: china and
glass items, embroidery, fabrics,
carved wood and metal objects of the
late 18-th -early 20-th centuries.
