This is one of the most outstanding
landmarks of the 18 th –century
architecture. It was designed by
Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli and
constructed in 1749-1757. The first
owner of the palace was Count Mikhail
Vorontsov, the Chancellor of the
Russian Empire. It is from his
surname that the name of the palace
originates. In the reign of Paul I
who became the Great Master of the
Maltese Order soon after becoming the
Czar, Vorontsov's Palace housed the
administration of the Order from 1798
to 1801.
In 1800, a Roman Catholic church
of St. John the Baptist designed by
Giacomo Quarenghi was constructed in
the courtyard of the palace. In 1801,
a Russian Orthodox chapel of St. John
the Baptist was constructed within
the palace building.
In 1810, the building of
Vorontsov's Palace was given to
Pages' School.
Now, Vorontsov's Palace houses the
Suvorov Military School.
