Sheremetev's Palace is the central building of the Fountain House mansion complex. It is a unique example of traditional country mansions. They are very few in St. Petersburg . The building was designed by the Russian architects Savva Chevakinsky and Fyodor Argunov (from the family of very talented artists, the Argunovs, who were serfs) and constructed in 1750-1755. In the process of construction, the walls of the palace constructed in the late 1730s-1740s were used. This is one of the best examples of Russian Baroque. In various epochs, many other architects contributed to decoration of the palace interiors. Among them were Ivan Starov, Andrei Voronikhin, Giacomo Quarenghi, Domenico Quadri, Nikolai Benois, Alexei Serebryakov, etc. The beautiful cast iron fence was designed by the architect Geronimo Corsini and made in 1844. In 1867, a one-floor service building was constructed at the palace (designed by the architect Nikolai Benois). Near the service building, is a beautiful gate decorated with the emblem of the Sheremetevs.

For more than two hundred years, the palace and all the mansion complex belonged to five generations of the elder representatives of the family of the Sheremetevs – well-known Russian Counts. After the revolution, the Museum of Noblemen's Life was founded in the palace building. The museum existed until 1931. Then, until 1984, Sheremetev's Palace housed a research center. All the palace interiors were destroyed, while the collections of the works of art were given to the leading museums of Leningrad and Moscow, except very few items decorating the interiors and still remaining in the building. In 1989, Sheremetev's Palace was given to the Museum of Theater and Music, and reconstruction of official and memorial rooms of the 19 th century began. At present, the museum of Sheremetev's Palace contains 2.5 thousand works of applied art and painting, coins, rare editions of music, post cards, gramophone records. It also houses the State Collection of Musical Instruments and, after reconstruction of some other rooms, there will be the St. Petersburg Museum of Music.
