The Petersburg Metropolitan (http://www.metro.spb.ru/) is not large, with just 4 lines, 59 stations (one of them – Proletarskaya – will be closed for repairs until the end of February, 2007), six transfer stations, and about 100 kilometers of track. The distance between the two end stations on the longest line (the “blue” line) is covered by trains in about 45 minutes. Finding your way around the system is not complex: each station has numerous signs and maps of the four lines. A single trip costs 12 rubles, but you can economize by buying a ticket for 10 to 50 trips or a travel card for a fixed period of time. The metro is the most reliable form of transport in the city, with no traffic jams and accidents occurring very rarely. Nevertheless, during the rush-hour there can be throngs of passengers trying to get into the stations and the carriages.
