About Petersburg - Palaces of Petersburg

Address: 6 St. Isaac's Square
metro "Nevsky prospekt"

Mariinsky Palace is one of the most typical examples of the Russian architecture of the 1840s. It is located on the place of the former Chernyshev's Palace and includes its main building designed by the architect Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe and constructed in 1762-1768. The walls of Chernyshev's Palace were used in the construction of this palace. Three neighboring buildings were demolished for the construction of this palace. The palace was constructed in the reign of Nicholas I for his daughter Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna (and the palace was named after her) and her husband, Duke of Leichtenberg. Firstly, the architect Carlo Rossi was asked to design this palace, but he was already old and could not work, so the palace was designed by Andrei Stakenschneider and constructed in 1839-1844.

Some interiors of the palace (the Rotonda, the Square Hall, the Boudoir) were admired by the contemporaries. But later, these rooms would be significantly redecorated.

In 1884, the palace was purchased by the State and became the site of the meetings of the State Council. After that, it paid an important role in the political history of Russia. At present the Mariinsky Palace houses the Legislative Council of St. Petersburg.
